Changing Spark Plugs

Firsty identifying the right spark plug is the most important step in changing your spark plugs. Choosing a plug that is too hot or too cold for your application can have severe effects on the performance of your engine. Check the link to help to guide your decision on the correct spark plug.

Step 1

Firstly remove the spark plug wire from the head of the engine. This is done by firmly griping the top most part of the spark plug wire and pull on it. Do this for each of the four plug wires.

TOOLS

3/8 inch drive extention

3/8 inch drive rachet handle

5/8 socket plug tool

Step 2

Once this is done attach the extention to the rachet handle and then the spark plug socket to the extention. Then place the socket and extention over the spark plug in the spark plug hole and then turn in a counterclockwise direction

Step 3

Now there are two ways to remove the spark plug from the cylinder head hole.

1. If the spark plug tool is equiped with a rubber insert then it can be used to pull the plug from the hole as shown below

2. If the spark plug tool does not have the rubber insert then the plug wire can be used to remove the spark plug from the cylinder head. Once the spark plug tool is used to completely loosen the spark plug,  the spark plug wire can then be reinserted into the hole with the loosend spark until the spark plug snaps into the spark plug wire. At this point the spark plug wire can then be removed with the spark plug in it as shown

Step4

Once all the spark plugs are removed you can refer to the site mentioned above and conduct your diagnosis on how healthy your engine is buring fuel.

Once diagnosis is complete you can move to the installation of the new plugs. Some people at this point may choose to adjust the gaps of their plugs. Personally unless you have a plug gapping tool I would recommend that you leave the factory gap in tact.

Step 5

To install the new plugs place it in the plug tool and then without the rachet handle attached lower it ino the cylinder head hole. Using your hand tighten in a clockwise direction. You use your hand to do intial tightening to reduce the chance of the plug being cross treaded while tightening.

Once it reaches the stage where it can be tightend no more with your hand then you re attach the rachet handle and continue tightening in a clockwise direction until it is tight enough.

Once that is done then you can go ahead and re install the plug wires after which you are done.
